EngageD Kit: Play and Design Impactful Sci-Comm Activities is a role-play and design thinking based workshop to enhance sci-comm skills, focusing on inclusive and creative public engagement that took place within the Science in the City, Malta’s National Arts and Science festival, pre-festival programme on Friday 13th September.
The workshop was led by Dr Edward Duca, Valentina Delconte (Faculty of Education – SciCultureD) and Daniel Solberg Bell (student at the University of Malta and SciCultureD Ambassador).
Now more than ever, engaging communities in science is critical for researchers and institutions to build trust and enhance Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion in society
About the EngageD kit role playing game
EngageDkit is a playful toolkit for science communicators to design creative and transdisciplinary public engagement activities….with a role-playing game!
The game is on at the Science and City Pre-festival: players will join a seriously-fun workshop in the Event Room of the Dar Guzeppi Zhara Building (TAKE OFF) of the Msida Campus to play an innovative and fun role-playing workshop to enhance your sci-comm skills and creatively plan engagement activities.

Through the use of design-thinking approach & creative pedagogies from the Sciculture Course kit, participants learnt how to create impactful activities to engage communities in your work: when the threat arises, the public engagers are called to action!
Players embodied different characters, complete missions, and also reflected on the Science in the City Festival Theme JEDI (Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion).
Learning outcomes:
– How to rethink public engagement activities from different,new perspectives
– How to integrate JEDI values and transdisciplinarity in the planned activities
– How to tap into in multidisciplinary and multicultural teams
– How use design thinking processes, creativity & other artsĀ
